Can you file down the starter to fit the flywheel teeth? my truck seems to grind and i notice its grinding off some of my teeth on my flywheel...im thinkin the starter is to far away from the flywheel teeth, someone told me that a person can file the top part of the starter down cause on some starters they have like a U shape groove where the starter bolts go thru, ive tried shimming but it only makes the starter move away from the flywheel without it turning the engine. If any other ideas let me know. Thanks

Never heard of grinding to fit. But I can tell you a reliable check for proper fit.
With the flywheel cover off use a screwdriver to engage the starter gear to the flywheel...the use a straightened paper clip and insert it at the tip of one tooth of the starter were it meets between the other two teeth of the flywheel. It should just barely fit it if is shimmed properly. Good luck!

I found a use to file the top part of the starter where the two bolts go thru...i dont know for sure if its just NAPA starters but the top end of the starter where the two bolts slide thru there`s like a u shape groove and i looked at other starters that worked previously before on my truck but instead of fixing them up i thought i would just buy myself a new one! but neways i always had issues with napa starters till recently i decided to try to file down the top part of the starter where the bolts go thru, i filed them down to a flat surface and it aligned rite up to the flywheel and so far so good, no problems!
