how hard is it to clean the egr valve? i was looking at buying one and they are a little to expensive for my taste. from what i have found online it seems like it is in a pretty convenient location on the engine, but im not really sure. After using seafoam yesterday, im thinking i should try and clean this out and replace the spark plugs and oil. thanks.

What is an EGR valve? What does it do? Does my 95 have one? My co worker just replaced his on his 2000 GrandPrix GT.

an EGR valve or exhaust gas recirculation valve is a form of emissions control divice. under vaccum it pulls in exhaust gases to cool off the combustion process. it does this by takin up space in the combustion chamber so there is less air and fuel mix and thus a cooler burn. yes your 95 will have one on the passenger side of your intake manifold near the back. mine is unhooked due to exhaust system modifications. they only work when you are at idle or lower rpms because they work under vaccum. at WOT or under heavy load they close for you to have the most power from the combustion cycle. one way that i was told and works is hit them with a screw driver a few times to break up any carbon deposits inside or get an atomizer type spray like the dealer uses. they will alwys get carbon and other deposits in them due to the fact they have exhaust gas going throught them. one way i see people doin is takin them off and puttin blocker plates on the intake manifold instead. hope this helps

just another idea that i have heard but havn`t had time to try, is to take it off and drop it on the ground to bust up the deposits
a new gasket is only .99 at pep boys
if i have time this sunday i may go ahead and do the drop on my egr valve

i went ahead and got my egr off today
wasn`t very hard
be very carefull with the vacuum line that is attached to it
there are 2 1/2 nuts that hold it on and it comes right off
easy way to do it is remove the entire air breather assembly and climb your into the engine bay and sit on the radiator support over top of the battery
i took mine off but it didn`t look that bad inside
it was black so i went ahead and dropped it onto my driveway a few times and spray the inside with electric motor cleaner for RC car motors
i let that sit in the egr for around 15 minutes and dumped it out and re-assemebled eveything
i havn`t had the truck out running since i did this so i don;t know if it worked
ill let you know later today
Well my SES light still coming on
guess i need to rescan it to see if its still the same code or a different one now
