The dash on my 2006 Z71 said service 4wd so i took it to the dealership. they told me the encoder motor was bad and needs replaced ($570). i got online and looked this up the encoder motor is actually called the transfer case shift motor, i think, so i called autozone and they quoted me $275. have any of you had this problem and is it a pain to fix? any help would be appreciated.

Is this the first time the message has come up? What happens when you hit the buttons? Will it go into 4x4?

I just replaced my Shift Motor. You just remove the front drive shaft and the 3 bolts holding the motor on. Got mine at Autozone also

Hope everthing works out with selector switch motor. I fought with mine for awhile on my 98. Mine turned out to be my VEH speed sensor. When it went all the way out I couldn`t drive anymore unless I wanted to in 1st gear.
Checked out the rockauto.com, that site is awsome. Easy to navigate through as well.
