I was looking at precision gears web site. They show the 4.10 and 4.56 gears both having 41 teeth on the ring gear. Does this mean they are the same size and all I have to do is change the pinion gear. The 4.10 pinion gear has 10 teeth and the 4.56 pinion gear has 9 teeth. The 5.13 has 41 teeth ring gear and a 8 teeth pinion gear. The only one (3.42 to 5.13) that doesn`t have 41 teeth is the 4.88 and it has 39 teeth. If I could just change a pinion gear it would probably make the job a little easier.

This is probably true, but I think if it were me, I would change both gears. Your existing gears are probably not Precision. This way you know the new gears will mesh correctly plus you then have two new gears and dont have to worry about a tooth chipping etc later on the older gear and having to redo it all again. Just my opinion.

Yea I agree, unless this isn`t a daily driver I would change both out that way you know them two are paired together and you`re way less likely to have a malfunction. If its a trail rig, I get you could get away with it.

I 3rd... I think that the gears would make a heck of a noise because they are seated together as mentioned above.

no replace the ring and pinion. If you replace the ring only and not the pinion, the wear pattern will be a problem.
You need to start fresh with both to get a good pattern.Of course shims also effect that as they adjust back lash

I found precision gears for $189 and now I am looking for a shop who I can trust. I went over to our Auto Hobby shop on the base and they don`t have the dial indicator or a tool for the bearing crush. I don`t want to buy tools for a one time job unless they are dirt cheap compared to labor. I kind of would like to have the peace of mind of having a shop do the work. I also would like to see if the shop can get a better price on the gears from their suppliers. If anyone has a shop they would recommend North of Philly I`m interested.

I was wondering about the wear on the ring gear. I only have about 64k miles on the truck but probably 30k of it pulling a camper. I can`t say that I am easy on my truck. I think the ring gear has to come out anyhow after looking at it to get to the pinion gear.

Around my area, you can expect to pay between $1200-$1400 depending on the shop. That included the gear sets, both master rebuild kits and labor. (4x4) Since yours is 2wd, You could expect around $500 for just the rears.. so the price really should be bad if you supply the mater rebuild kit and gears.

Dealer told me $500 if I bring the gears and rebuild kit. Surely someone has a better price than the dealer. I only have 4x2.
