i have a 96 3500, 350/auto. the truck just shuts off periodically while driving.
sometimes it starts right back up, but other times it takes a while.
it has dual tanks, but i abandoned the rear tank b/c the filler pipe was rotted out . the fuel gauage only read 1/2 when i fill up the front tank, but the needle flutters, back and forth real fast. i have a feeling it has something to do with the fuel pump/gauge. any thoughts?

I would fuel pump and gauge connections, changing the fuel filter can't hurt.

The fuel gauge stops at 1/2 full because it averages both tanks together, so you are only 1/2 full of fuel. The fluttering was a common problem with the clusters on 96-98 (00 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and all full size suvs)
The connectors going to the fuel sending unit at the top of the fuel tank were also prone to burning due to excessive amperage drawl from the fuel pump, this would usually end up in runs and stalls and/or cranks will not start concerns. Check your connector at the sending unit for burning, if it is burnt you need to replace the connector, sending unit, and fuel pump.
